Everyone has a different reason for wanting to renovate their home. Sometimes it’s a need for a change; other times, the motivation is more practical due to unforeseen circumstances.
From the planning stages to the finishing touches, it’s important to understand some of the key considerations in any renovation project.

LIFESTYLE Renovations: They improve your home and your way of life, examples may include building a sunroom or converting unused space into living quarters to meet your changing needs.

RETROFIT Projects: The focus here is on your home’s mechanical systems, upgrading insulation, replacing your furnace or putting on new siding, for example.

MAINTENANCE Projects: These can be as simple as repairing caulking to windows or as elaborate as shingling your roof or installing replacement windows or new eaves troughs.

When considering a home improvement, it’s important to ask yourself these important questions:

Is your renovation practical?

Will you get your money’s worth out of it?

Is your renovation adaptable?

Know who you are dealing with.

Feel free to ask contractors to provide you with references. Take the time to contact these references and find out if the work was completed on time and to their satisfaction.


Make sure you are protected from risks.

Whether the project is small or large, there are a couple of things that you should know before you decide on a contractor:

Does the contractor have Business Liability Insurance and Workman’s Compensation coverage?
Are they registered with the government and will they provide you with a written warranty?


Lastly – get it in writing!

Regardless of the size of the project ensure that there is a signed written contract.
